It is merely a test, so feel free to comment. But these will come up time to time to suggest or direct your attention to something or someone I would like to spotlight of worthy of well, your attention.

Today I would like you to check out http://www.thelot.com/ and focus your attention of Jason Epperson. I have been voting for this guy since the show began. He is a filmmaker from Kentucky and claims to be a Christian. He has promise and a lot of people like him and next week during the final show, I believe he will be the winner to work with Spielberg. The site itself is of great value for any filmmaker and if your serious about this biz you need to watch and play on the site it is loaded. I think the show could have been better, but hey there is nothing else like it currently. If these guys can make it we all can. There are so many opportunities it is ridiculous not to get something your doing seen outside of your living room. So watch, check out the site and get inspired and Go, Do, Be.

Peace,
TC

BTW, what do you think of the title?

Transtions

Hey guys there have been a lot of transition going on with myself and with MMM. I thought in this blog I would just update you on some changes with MMM since at this point I am just getting settled in my new apartment that I just moved in to, but I will explain that in more detail at the end.

MMM is no longer meeting at McDaniel's Farm restaurant, due to its closing. The group now meets at a church off of Gordon Rd. that is being newly renovated. A lot of new people are starting to come and MMM needed new and more space anyway. The annual banquet is slotted for Nov. 30th in which I will show a short version of this doc. So needless to say I have a lot of work ahead of me and I am busy trying to figure how I can create a plan to have time to finish the doc. I will be out of a job in September and I am looking for one related to my Field and that won't suck time away from my wife, church, and my own work (like this doc). Now that is going to be hard to find, but hey the Lord will provide, trust me everything thus far has worked out.

As for me like I said we just moved to a sweet spot off of River Rd. that is only temporary while we look for a house. Also we both are looking for new jobs, mine here is a temp job and I need something that will last until I quit or I am fired, and my wife just needs something better, hopefully it will be working with me at my new job doing something related to film or video. The whole having my own business thing needs to be re-thought and may not be best for my future goals, but we'll see. Please feel free to give us advice or point us to anything that could help.

Speaking of advice please remember this blog is for you to give you the opportunity to ask questions and suggest anything pertaining to this doc or if whatever (I evaluate every comment before it is posted any way). Oh and btw if anyone wants to help feel free to speak up.

Peace,
TC

Back in the saddle, again!!!

Well hello to anyone who reads this blog. It has been awhile, but I have new equipment and an old mission, so watch out. I have had some good times and have been refreshed and I your going to see some new exciting things come your way and I will point you to the hype starting at this blog since it is the most updated and viewed. I have a myspace page at www.myspace.com/tac7980 and I will be starting a new blog that I am currently brainstorming. There is a whole lot more, but I will keep you posted on here or the new blog soon. As for now I am currently moving, looking for work and finishing this doc. I have met some cool guys (Storme and Lee) from http://www.eleven72.com/ when I went to Austin (thanks Shannon). Check out their site among Shannon's and Andre's. I am also entering a treatment into the SAICFF . I am also helping Joe Carr out from http://www.gospelforbrazil.org/ with editing some footage together for a promo video and stuff for his site. I should be going to India sometime too, but I have to update you on that as I get the updates myself. So see there is a lot going on and more than this too. No real income, but a lot of adventures and filmmaking fun (who knows this may lead to elsewhere?). So till next time...

Peace,
TC

The end...?

Well it is done. Out team has met and discussed final preparation's and filming for at least doc class purposes. We are putting together our binder information and transferring and copying tapes to turn in on the 7th. We shot footage of Dr. B taking us on a tour of his life through pictures, achievements and other nick knacks in his home. Ms. Doris was "puny" once again and did not follow, but she did come out occasionally and it was a wonderful interaction between the two, Dr. B and Ms. Doris. We also filmed the exterior of the house and street along with his suit case as he prepares to leave this Saturday for a week. There was more or is more to get, but I will continue to get what I need and leave a note and contact info. for the editing class so if they need more or if they have ideas we did not think of or have time to get. I also volunteered to turn their slides into photo prints. Ms. Doris has wanted to do this for some time and has not been able too, so I requested to do it for her at no charge and they wanted to pay me, but I refused and they agreed. I just ask them to walk us through the pictures later or do a slide show for us, which they agreed to also. And Dr. B has requested to take us guys out to eat some time in about two weeks when things smooth out in his schedule and we all are going to take him up on that. He has invited me and my wife out May 22 for diner in honor of my graduating and said it be okay to film, but we will see, I am sure I will. Dr. B and Ms. Doris give their best to our class and wanted to say thank you, and he continued to remind us he is just and ordinary guy, hahaha.

Well what else? The class seemed to respond well Wednesday in class to our footage, even though it was a rough throw together edit. I believe I have learned a lot and plan to continue this project and involve Shannon's opinion if she so chooses through out the future of this doc. I really respect others opinions and welcome them openly. So thank you all for your attention and suggestions and to my team thank you greatly for your help and support and I hope to continue with you all and help you in your future progress as well. But this project is for you and the people, and everyone will be invited to the final screening. Keep posted to this site for updates and how to contact me and other goodies. I am sure I have forgotten somethings or someone, but for now I am signing off and wish you all the best. Wednesday I went to the Wake Forest - Raleigh area to film Dr. B on the road. We had to drive separately due to the fact he stays overnight to teach at the seminary on Thursdays, but we met up at the Cracker Barrel and afterward I went to the seminary and shot some footage around there while Dr. B went to a dinner date with another gentleman. I met back up with him at Richland Creek Community Church his Raleigh mentoring class to film some extra shots and his interaction with the men there. Everything went really good, and I got back into Wilmington around 11pm. Then for Friday Matt met me at the morning school and we shot some extra coverage of Dr. B. We had some camera problems, but we were able to recover and get what we needed. Around nine we all met at Dr. B's and had another interview with him. I believe Ms. Doris was a little under the weather so we did not do a tour through the house, but we were invited back next week to get what we need. Dr. B has been so great and compliant and willing to answer anything. Jake keep the camera running even outside of the interview which I believe has some great stuff we can use. Each time we go over there it seems we learn more and think of more to get and never get it all. I also learn more about different documentary techniques that I can use and develop. I thought I knew a lot of who Dr. B was, but he surprises me every time and he becomes more and more interesting. I want to continue to get more stuff after we are done with classes, because I feel there is so much more there that we could not spend all our time to get like we hoped. Especially the more we all together spend time alone with Dr. B he opens up and reveals new things and he has really grown to like Jake and Matt which shows his humanistic side not just a public figure, he loves people and you can tell with each new meeting. Also I see the time it takes to enter in and get closer to your subjects until they forget about the camera. I have gained through this experience the respect for all of them especially ones like Naomi who lives with her subjects. I believe we will and do have enough footage to create a 10-15 min or more doc, but this has the potential to be much bigger and leads into so many more things outside of just mentoring, just like with "Nobodies Business". When we return next week we will be asking more personal and family type questions as they take us on a tour through their home and with Dr. B as he exercises. We did get some B-roll in the house, but we will get more and repeat next week. For our next meeting together we will discuss what we have and what we need for our final shoot among other things. But enough with me, I think the other guys are writing some good stuff on their blogs. I have learned so much in this class in conjunction with advanced editing about how to make this film and hate it all is almost over, but then again it all has just begun.

Peace,
TC

P.S. I am sure I have forgot something, but I can add anytime or if you read or hear something just ask and I will post.

In Mourning and Memory

Michael & Me

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_uik3pGkaPAo/RiV1WVZc8FI/AAAAAAAAAAM/SoPHbaaulrY/s320/Lindsey%27s+wed+and+other+312.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5054575183354720338" />

This is the UNCW crew with Michael Moore at Full Frame Film Festival. I was gone to Disney two weeks ago during Easter with Amber. And this past weekend I was at Full Frame Film Festival. We have basically put in writing what were we are going with this doc and looked at what we need. We are going to look at Dr. B in his public life and his private life and the balance between the two and how he overcomes struggles of his two worlds. Our last in class preview of some of our work was much better than the first and people agree they like staying on him. I believe this is important for such a short doc any how, especially since this is where our greatest interest is any way. I also found a doc entitled "Journey of the Heart: Henri Nouwen". I believe it really suits what we are doing, but it is on a very long wait at Netflix, so I will try to find it else where. I will still watch it regardless if it is after graduation or not.

While I was at the festival I wanted to achieve two things for our doc outside of the other reasons for going. First I got some B-roll of Duke Universities Chapel and other parts of campus. I new this would be good B-roll because Dr. B talks about his time at Duke. Second, I wanted to critic the docs at the festival and take back some knowledge from the panels along with my critics. I got some real good ideas from B-roll use to content and how other portraits were done and what has not been done. All I can say is I know I am a filmmaker and I love all aspects of film. I also would like to share how some of these docs opened my mind and heart even more toward the issues in Africa. Amber and I have always had a heart for world missions and I have especially had a interest in Africa and even adopting from there. China and Africa are in such turmoil and the way orphans and people in general are treated is unreal and the HIV/Aids epidemic is a huge concern too. Well not to go into to much, I am now considering changing plans and taking roots in Africa (it was always kinda of in me anyway), but this will take much preparation, educating and prayer. Though I may not agree with all things said in some of these docs or there methods, I do agree that some action needs to take place. I hope that when I share these thoughts and concerns with my family and church it will motivate others to take action or jump on things that concern them and make a difference. I will continue to work on this doc too, and other ideas I have, but I need to at least start something now toward this matter of my heart.

Well enough said for now, I will post some photos and all for you later, but first I've got to get them to Shannon.

Peace,
TC

Did You Know?

Did you know today April 2nd is Travis Currin day in Angier, NC. I have had all kind of things going on and trying to get things organized. We interviewed Dr. B this Friday along with his wife Ms. Doris Bennett. It went well and was the first initial interview of three with Dr. B besides the day in the life footage. There is plenty of B-roll to shoot in his home, it is unbelievable. Jake was great helping me entertain them as we set up, it really help past the time. Unfortunately Ms. Doris started to feel bad and had to leave and that kind of ended the interview, but Dr. B was kind and help us plan for the next one. We are all getting together Tuesday for a special meeting and discussing a new approach for them, since they can not interview as long as others and Dr. B has a lot to tell. So we will probably email him questions in advance so he may prepare to give specific to the point answers and we will also plan off the hip questions too, but get to the ones we want. This has really caused us to think exactly what we want to see and show, so we are getting straight to the point and also using others to answer for him, such as Thad his assistant who is really close to him. I have to admit we have all we need at our finger tips, it is just the ethics of how to approach Dr. B and Ms. Doris without over staying our welcome I guess. We also made a technical decision to use only the Keno's since the Arri lights get way too hot for Dr. B and Ms. Doris. We do have other interviews straggled throughout our last few weeks, we may have more than enough and yet still not all. During our interview they both gave us plenty of ideas to film which was great. We also may do a lot of interviews at the restaurant which will fit since Dr. B is there a lot and his school meets there and it makes it convenient for some of the ones we are interviewing. Our equipment check out times will have to change along with shooting since we have to do some during the week now, which will make it hard for us, but we will manage. I am worried about the week I go to Full Frame, but I guess the others can film without me, it will be something we have to discuss on Tuesday.

Well I have more, but I will have to come back. It is getting late and I have to catch up on some sleep for now or I will be no good this upcoming week.

Peace,
TC

Fry-day

Well this week has been extremely busy as will next week. I was able to organize some interviews for the next few weeks. We were suppose to interview Dr. B and Thad this week, but things fell through and we will do those interviews next Friday. Thad is a big help in getting things I need and he understands what I am doing and he is really helping us out a lot. I emailed him a personal letter to explain what our intentions where and what we need and so forth and he was glad to respond and support in any way possible. Just this morning at 4 something all three of us woke up to arrive at Middle and McDaniel's Restaurant to video Ms. Mary and Terrell open up and get the place ready. We also videoed Dr. B and Thad getting set up and all of the cars arriving. After we finished that Matt and I got inside B-roll and plenty of it while Jake did the outside. The guys left and I stayed behind and after the meeting I decided to shoot some more of Dr. B eating and a prettier shot of the outside with the sun hitting the restaurant. I am now trying to get at least one interview with Jeffery (he is also writing the song for our film) tomorrow, but I will have to keep you posted on that one. I am doing this to recover from the loss of the other interviews.

We have made some major decisions and are mainly trying to shoot the people we can get locally and easily first. We need these interviews any way and can easily obtain them now rather than trying to kill each others schedules to do more difficult filming days. I think this is the best strategy for now, especially since I am determined to continue on with this after May when I and the others will have more time to travel or do odd days. As of right now we are forced to do Thursdays - Saturday shoots and this also works for the local interviewee's. And after reviewing Shannon's notes and seeing how some things seemed a bit hazy on what type of doc we were doing, I plan on clearing it up with our new synopsis. We are going to focus on a portrait of Dr. B as a mentor. The whole team even agrees with this and this is the true heart of our doc. Our challenge or mine at least is to remain objective and to show the conflict. After much discussion and dissecting, I believe the biggest conflict comes with Dr. B and his wife Doris and her health issues and him having to leave town like he does. I believe that is where his heart is and there in lies our story. Ambition is defiantly my weakness, I want to do so much I have a hard time focusing, but that is where my team steps in and helps. So guys keep it up and challenge me, we can't do it all at once.

Now I am off with Amber to get some good 'ol "fried" food and sweet tea.

Friday Cocktail

Howdy again blog-heads,

WARNING: SOME INFORMATION BELOW USES FILM LINGO!!!

I have so much to say, but so little space and time so I will keep this one short (this installment includes B-roll reading comments and thoughts with Fridays update). Our team met this Thursday to discuss upcoming interviews, and we will be shooting next week with Dr. B and another member of the school and his family (Matt has already reserved the equipment). We also are doing some B-roll of McDaniel's Farm and the men arriving early. I shot over the break two sessions of the class for our final edit later, but couldn't get it all so we are heading back to do this next week. Also Finney Mathews emailed me and said he will be back in May, so we won't get to see that footage in class, but I plan on shooting it for the final project any way. I am learning quick that either you wait or you spend in this business, because he is such a busy man and in a foreign country that you have to wait on him or spend the money to go to him. Since I am poor right now, I choose to wait, besides I am going to India in 2008. So as for an update of what has been going on and what is going be going on I believe that's up for now.

As for the B-roll article here's what I got...
It was an okay piece the author discussed some different types of B-roll, but not all. It seemed to focus more on the MEM type, which was totally cool and I really dug that info. It actually inspired me to do make sure all my footage is quality and shoot enough and even go out and collect B-roll and make sure at any and all opportunities that require you to use your camera to make sure it is good enough to show and sell (even home videos). I agree that the B-roll is important and helps cover mistakes and I actually love showing it and plan to use it so I don't have a collection of talking heads (spooky). And taking notes and shooting the B-roll after the interview is what Shannon has been teaching too, that a lot of the time if not all the time the subject will tell you what to shoot (but you got to read between the lines as they say). BUT I disagree about one thing the writer of this article said,"Never leave a talking head without hand shots". I don't know if he means every time and all docs that have these type interviews or if he means when you need to cover a mistake or jump shot or ADR. I hate just hand shots, but that's me, if you have a talking head I don't think you have to have hands too. In any case it is a matter of taste and opinion. If I want hand gestures I will shoot a MS, but sometimes I know some people do not want this type shot of themselves, and I wouldn't. In such a case yes you could use hands or other footage. I have seen some bad docs where you could tell the person was uncomfortable with their framing (if they knew I suspect) because they start pulling at their shirt or what not. As a director of a doc we must also read body language at the same time we take notes and make quick adjustments. This is only one example, but we should always before a shoot (or at least I do) run over how I think it will go to weed out and think of all possibilities and problems that may occur. I do this afterward too even if during a break, so I can make a quick recovery. I am no expert, but I am a filmmaker and this is just my own personal tips that I do and find effective for me.

Well that was more than I had planned, but I think typing sometimes relieves my stress, so reader BEWARE.

BTW "Four Eyed Monster" was awesome and Naomi Uman came to our class and she rocked. I love filmmakers who know why they do what they do and you can feel their passion, it's like I click with this total stranger in this one tiny moment in time.

Peace,
TC

Friday edition

So we have meet again twice now on Monday to finish the proposal pkg. and Thursday to go over what we need to do next. We have divided up the positions and will come back together on Tuesday to finalize the package. I will be taking the footage we have to show on Wednesday in Monday afternoon to get it ready for presentation. We are so ready to get some more footage and get this on the road. I have emailed some questions to Shannon to confirm our budget. I am sending emails out to make sure we are set for Tuesdays meeting. Other than that, the rest is pretty basic and same old stuff. I am currently working on contacts and locations and times to meet. I am also working on questions to ask and trying to get ahead on organization and coverage. I will be making some storyboards up too. With all this said I am working on reading and keeping my self educated and challenged so we have a good doc after all is said and done and so I can be ready to shoot my next one.

Wednesday and Friday rocked. David Gatten came to campus and well you have to meet him to understand. It was totally inspiring and I could really relate to this guy and how he views film making. If you have not seen this guy and his work make sure you add that to your "before I die" to-do list, especially if your a film maker. Thanks for inviting him;)

Oh, and to those who have asked questions on my blog I will be having a special blogging session for those later, so stay posted.

Peace,
TC

Music to my ears

I have been wanting to add music to the doc, but didn't want to use something already in existence and have to try to secure the rights. One song I was thinking of was Keep On The Sunny Side, but like I said before I don't want to have to deal with all the legal matters. So I got an idea awhile back when Shannon was talking about using local artist in the Cucalorus doc. One of the guys in the Mentoring School writes songs and can play the guitar, banjo and others, so I will be asking him to write a song titled the same as the doc that would be fitting. I will be giving him a call to try and get this. I have done this before and I prefer it, because I like original stuff especially home grown. I will keep you posted and we will add this to our binder. I have been a part of Dr. B's mentoring school for about two years. Before I met Dr. B I had never had a mentor and this was a new thing to me. I thought it was only for kids, that a man can't have nor needs a mentor. So I guess Dr. B just influenced me so much by believing in me and just basically being himself and making himself available that I had or wanted to let others know about him and the power and need for mentoring for all ages. I have recently noticed the increase in the resources and attention that mentoring has received and even several churches looking into starting mentoring ministries within their churches. So with all this going on and the PSA's during January (mentoring month) I thought it was important to film this doc. And I guess I am really passionate about this topic and this man's legacy and no one else has done this (a doc on Dr. B nor on Mentoring) yet and I feel like I am the one who can and wants to do this doc. Now there is a growing number of people who are interested in this doc and want to see it completed. It can be a little intimidating and it may not be a big deal to most, but regardless this is a very important story that needs to be told and I am telling it with the help of two of the best team mates ever. They are my crew, and my friends. They help keep me focused and help get the job done.

By Friday

Howdy,

I have not given you an update for a little while, but a lot has happen since the last one. We have had I think three meetings on our Thursday meeting dates and our team all went and sat in on a Friday morning session with Dr. B. Everyone got to meet Dr. B and we had time to chat afterward over some scrumptious breakfast. I believe with every new meeting, research and even activities such as this our team grows to understand and develop what we are aiming for in our film.

We are currently working on our proposal/treatment package (more detailed and extended than what I have posted). We met today and discussed each area and divided up the duties to complete the project. It was a very good meeting and we even took time, as always to reflect on the night before and bring up new ideas or anything. So basically we are just in the process of tightening things up and preparing for the filming process. We are getting together some of the documentaries we posted and are going to watch and learn and brainstorm. We will also have a special meeting Monday morning to finalize or package paper work.

On the side I took the liberty to finally watch This Film Has Not Yet Rated. I have been wanting to see it for a while now. This film helped me realize some things about our doc. I learned that the ending is important. This film had raised a lot of questions for me that did not get answered, but that was not the focus or purpose of the doc. In the "end" the director achieved what he set out to do. I have taken this and applied to our film. We too have a film that raises a lot of questions like we ran into last night, but our film is not about a particular religion or what not, but about mentoring. Yes we chose this group to be the case study, but we could have chosen any group and would probably have questions arise with it also. We are going to stay focused and in the end conclude with the answer and focus we set out to find. We will not please the masses, but who can?

Research Articles

Below are just a few of the many articles that relate to our subject or brought up questions and curiosity about mentoring. There are even subjects that I believe we will discuss that I have yet found any research on. I hope by intelligently seeking such information that challenges our documentary and us individualy we will have a better understanding and supportive film. This is fun for me, but I do have to admit reading a bunch can drive you mad. I can see that having a team collaborate on the research they find is much more efficient. Other mentoring programs are discussed as well.
ISSN: 0021-5996
Accession Number: 23762476

Persistent link to this record: http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=f5h&AN=23762476&site=ehost-live

Cut and Paste: - Show quoted text - How Mentoring Can Have A Positive Impact On Your Life.

Database: MasterFILE Premier

Title: January is National Mentoring Month.
Authors: Quevedo, Silvia squevedo@asha.org
Source: ASHA Leader; 01/23/2006, Vol. 12 Issue 1, p17-17, 1/3p
Document Type: Article
Subject Terms: *ROLE models
*MENTORING
*JANUARY
*MENTORS
Congresses
AMERICAN Speech-Language-Hearing Association
Abstract: The author discusses how January is National Mentoring month. A steady stream of unsettling incidents involving young people helps propel the discussion on the impact of role models--positive and negative--on impressionable youth and formative children. It's an especially urgent topic in urban America, where the social and economic fabric continues to unravel. The end results of disintegrating family structures are obvious in the troubled Buffalo, New York neighborhood.
ISSN: 1550-1140
Accession Number: 16160866

Persistent link to this record: http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=hgh&AN=16160866&site=ehost-live

Cut and Paste: COME, FOLLOW ME: The call to Christian mentoring.

Database: Humanities International Index

Title: Mentor relationships in secular and religious professional psychology programs.
Author(s): Fallow, Gregory O., George Fox U, Newberg, OR, US
Johnson, W. A survey instrument regarding mentor relationships was completed by 2 distinct samples of PsyD clinical psychologists: (1) a random sample of 373 PsyD members of the American Psychological Association (APA), and (2) 286 graduates from the religiously integrated PsyD programs at George Fox University, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Rosemead School of Psychology. Overall, 55% of PsyD graduates reported having a faculty mentor during graduate school. Graduates of secular and religious programs were equally likely to be mentored. Mentors in religious programs were significantly more likely to be male ( 88.2%) than mentors in secular programs (59%). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 female professors from Christian institutions and the data were analyzed according to Strauss and Corbin's (1998) techniques for analyzing qualitative data based on a grounded theory approach. Analysis of the data resulted in two prominent themes, directionality and dimensionality. Both directionality and dimensionality occur within a spectrum of mentoring where tension is frequently experienced with regard to balancing multiple roles. Also, one's faith affects decisions that are made. At one end of the spectrum are unidirectional and unidimensional mentoring relationships. As an individual and/or mentoring relationship develops, the spectrum widens to include relationships that are increasingly bi-directional and multidimensional. Furthermore, as individual development occurs, experiences of internal tension likely change in tandem with developmental needs and/or a deepening of faith. Early mentoring relationships were often described by the participants as unidirectional because one is usually receiving modeling, guidance and advice from another. Throughout one's development and growth, mentoring evolves into more bi-directional relationships when one experiences mutuality with a mentor. Co-mentoring can be described as the pinnacle of directionality because it implies mutuality with each other or within a group without the power differential that is present in traditional mentoring relationships. The results also indicate that different facets of life, or dimensions, emerge as mentoring relationships evolve. Dimensions build on each other and include negotiating one's career path and navigating the balancing of multiple roles. Internal tension and faith are present throughout the spectrum of dimensionality and, if expressed, aid in the movement to multidimensional mentoring relationships. The findings suggest that mentoring involves a developmental and dynamic process that is not static, nor easily reduced to discrete stages. The mentoring narratives relate the conversion of the mentee from narcissism to selfless devotion to the community. By retaining the Christian value of self-abnegation and the Christian tendency to devalue nature, Eliot, nominally a secular humanist who abandoned Christianity, reveals herself still to be a covert Christian. In Chapter 1 I introduce the moral mentoring theme and provide background material. Chapter 2 consists of an examination of Felix Holt, which clearly displays Eliot's crucial dichotomy: the moral is superior to the natural. In Chapter 3 I present a Freudian analysis of Gwendolen Harleth, the mentee most fully developed. In Chapter 4 I examine two early mentees, who differ from later mentees primarily in that they are not egotists and can be treated with sympathy. Chapter 5 covers three gender-modified relationships. These relationships show contrasting views of nature: in the Dinah Morris-Hetty Sorrel narrative, like most of the others, Eliot privileges the transcendence of nature. The other two, Mary Garth-Fred Vincy and Dolly Winthrop-Silas Marner, are exceptions as Eliot portrays in them a Wordsworthian reconciliation with nature. In Chapter 6 I focus on Maggie Tulliver, a mentee with three failed mentors and two antimentors. Maggie chooses regression over growth as symbolized by her drowning death in her brother's arms. In Chapter 7 I examine Middlemarch, whose lack of a successful standard mentoring relationship contributes to its dark vision. Chapter 8 contains a reading of Romola which interprets Romola, the only mentee whose story takes place outside nineteenth-century England, as a feminist fantasy for Eliot. Chapter 9 concludes the discussion, focusing primarily on the question why the mentoring theme was so compelling for George Eliot. In the Appendix I examine the relationships in Eliot's life in which she herself was a mentee or a mentor. The act of mentoring may include program goals, schedules and training, which serve to inspire the student to follow their dreams. It is believed by many that there is a lack of mentoring figures for today’s youth. We will touch on the history of mentoring and a number of common techniques that may be practiced in a formal mentoring relationship. We will then make a case study of Dr. Bill Bennett and his organization Mentoring Men for the Master. This organization is aimed to guide Christian men of all ages who may be interested in anything from achieving a greater understanding of the bible, entering the ministry as a vocation or even becoming a mentor themselves. We will attempt to balance both the importance of mentoring and that of Dr. Bennett’s organization as not to focus too heavily on the historical or religious perspective of either. However, because mentoring is such a broad subject we will concentrate primarily on Dr. Bennett’s practices and his group of Christian men to show the importance and effectiveness of mentoring as a whole.

First we would like to include a section of brief random street interviews that would segue us into our subject of mentoring. We will seek out and speak with an expert in the field of mentoring and discuss the mentoring movement in America as it is right now with a brief history of its beginnings. Through this we will also take a look at the impact of mentoring and the practices that are currently in existence. By exploring the growing number of books and other resources available on the subject of mentoring and the implementing of a national mentoring month and promotions of Public Service Announcements, we will take a glance of the globalization of this subject. To better understand this topic and its impact on our society we will look at Mentoring Men for the Master (MMM) and its creator Dr. Bill Bennett. By looking at this subject from a local groups perspective we will see from this group how mentoring has and can spread to a global community reaching as far as India. We will be able to interview several people (men, women and youth) from different areas of mentoring within this organization to talk about its personal impact and effectiveness in their lives and those around them in their homes and community. Through this film we will see how MMM’s practices are compared to those mentioned by our mentoring expert, and how Dr. Bennett’s methods differ and/or are similar.

Through the use of mini DV, this 15-minute story of Dr. Bennett and Mentoring Men for the Master will be an account of human relationships. Through our encounters with those whose lives have been changed by this mentoring group, either through active participation within the group or through relationships with active participants, the audience will gain a better understanding of the impact that mentoring can have on one’s life. Although the approach to the idea of mentoring will be from a Christian viewpoint for this particular piece, the audience will see that the basic principals of mentoring are universal and needed in our society today. Dr. Bennett’s compelling story will serve as the foundation for illustrating the effectiveness of the application of these basic principals, while entertaining the audience at the same time.

Our Audience

Our group got together last Thursday and discussed what each of us was to report on by next class. We each already had ideas and we took time to share them and expound upon others thoughts within our team. In my search to discover who our audience is and how we plan to get our documentary shown, I found that both went hand in hand. So I really worked backwards and decided where I wanted this to potentially be seen. My first thoughts are I know the Mentoring school would like to see it. Also we would like to show it in churches. But we also would like it to be seen on TV like PBS and even other public venues such as film festivals like Cucalorus. So looking at this we need to gear our documentary in a way to make our audience want to see this film and stay seated through out the film and tell others about it. We need to keep from making it only promote MMM, but more universal to show the importance of the subject. This will help not only MMM, but all mentoring origination's, but show MMM as our case study since we can not possibly show all mentoring groups. Even Dr. B is all about this, he sees the issue is important not his ministry only. He basically was called to do this and saw the need and is active in meeting that need. Recently they are gearing up to reach young men too. Though some are coming with their fathers or on their own, Dr. B sees a need their to be meet and they are in prayer about this specific area too.

I think about how the Cucalorus doc was very heavily on one side and kinda dismissed the other surrounding film festivals. We do not want to do this, but rather unify and reach out in hopes this can be more globally shown and want to be shown. There are no documentaries I have found on this issue, but for those telling how to be a mentor for the classroom. We want to document not teach, so this is a primary goal. The reason we want this to be so global and be seen all over is the same reason I suppose why there is a Mentoring Month and PSA's. I am in the process to find these answers out as well. This is important in a society that thinks we can do it all on our own. This is a social importance as much as it is personal. I hope that our audience will since an urgency and pass the word. I understand this doc is not about converting people to Christianity or one type of mentoring, but rather express a need and put the question or that need in their minds. Only a few will take the call and do it possibly. And through this maybe just showing the lives and impact on lives will be enough to motivate and engage people to do this and from there they will learn what and how it needs to be done.

Other ideas to get the film seen is to show it online or link to our website or publish on other websites. Even go to events outside of churches that deal with the issue especially during January. I hope this can change the way Christian documentaries or any film in general is approached and shot and become a better example. I know my own faith plays a big role and I hope we can approach this film in a new inventive way that inspires. Reaching people as Jesus did is a key factor, that is much different sometimes than how most "Christians" reach people. I want to show not tell. I hope that this film will engage better than the PSA's do in encouraging people to be a mentor and seek a mentor.

Does anyone have a story they would like to share? How do you feel about this idea? And please share anything else from questions to comments.

TC

Moment of Silence

My uncle passed away this past Friday and we held his funeral Sunday. I thinking the style is our approach toward the topic and how and who we interview (focus). Though our case study is mainly Dr. Bennett and his mentoring school we will also bring in people from the schools to interview that are laid out in his website (i.e. the lay person, those considering ministry roles, and current ministers). Also a good idea is to take a range of attenders from newest to oldest members. Now that only covers the school it self, but we also need to brainstorm on outsiders, oh yeah and the wives among other women. I think even the workers at McDaniel's Farm restaurant will be good to get their views on the school meeting there. I was even considering going to surrounding churches from plants to already established churches, to see their reactions. I can go on and on, but we will come together on this Thursday and beat these ideas out.

We plan on shooting the day and the life of Dr. B and the school itself among other events. Also maybe hit up other mentoring groups and take some stuff from PSA's and so on like the ones below. I do like the street interviewing one a lot, but I hope we can create an engaging and not so traditional way of doing our doc. I think it is pretty straight forward, but in post we can still keep the traditional look, but with a new approach, I don't know for sure yet, but that's the point of just brainstorming this out. The most important part is preparation and making sure we can keep in mind a whole range of questions and so on to stay away from being a promotional video. But I feel deeply that we should have a firm look at Dr. B, because I believe he is an important subject even outside of mentoring, heck who knows we may change from mentoring to total focus on him in a portrait like Armor of God. There are so many possibility's, but I think we are pretty much set, I am just playing with options and ideas. I do know one thing, that I will be adding more footage beyond this class in May. I think now I will stay focused on mentoring, and include more on Dr. B along the way for something separate. Hey, who says we can't knock out two birds with one stone, as long as I don't wear out my team. But I will not ask to much of them, nor will I ask them anything that I will not be willing to do.

The team is also aware that if and when they go out of town to get as much footage and research as they can to Borden our boarders. But I am excited and think this is a very interesting subject. I have gone on a search to find documentaries on this subject and have not "yet". But I have found books and a few websites and those PSA's, and my search continues. This subject is so important I believe to all walks of life, not just having a mentor, but to be a mentor. More to come, look out.

From the sunny side,
TC
<img width='1' height='1' It was a very good doc. that I would suggest everyone see. After we finished watching it we discussed more about our own project and how we could relate this doc. and others we have seen to creating our own style and focus. We each shared what we thought and of the film and then I ask for everyone to brainstorm and come up with ideas of how to approach our documentary. I also shared some things I would like for us to consider, such as how to build a story about mentoring around our case study Dr. B. Some ideas I have even had are to talk about how global the issue is by using examples of PSA's on TV that use celebs speaking on mentoring. I even have seen a boom in books on the subject. We covered quiet a bit within our two hour meeting.

Speaking of mentoring and Dr. B, I went to the school again this early morn and Thad Dr. B's assistant asked to meet with me next week over breakfast after the school meets. I will be sitting down with him and another member of the group who's son is interested in becoming a film maker and is interested in what I am doing. They want to regularly record the school (non documentary related, but can use footage). I don't know all the details yet, but I believe the one gentleman's son will do that and I am to basically help him or maybe even be a mentor, who knows, I will keep you updated. It is really awesome to see young people get interested in film and even in their own faith. I hope I can be a good influence and all.

By the way Alan Berliner kinda resembles Chuck Norris. Which would go along with how he mentioned we are like 50th cousins away from everyone in the world (six degree-ish). My team meet last night before class as I said we would. We pretty much covered everything our professor talked about in class, which was kinda cool. After the meeting and the class all three of us amigos are feeling a lot better. We are really excited about the project. Everyone is getting really involved in this as well. We decided on a regular time to meet (but it won't be the only time) on Thursday's at 9:30am. Yes in the morning and after our class, it was the most effective time for every ones schedules and good strategy to go over what we discussed in class. We are really striving to be organized and professional, gain experience and knowledge and all this while having fun and making something that is effecting.

We also will be meeting tomorrow (Friday) at 8:00 am, yes 8am to watch "No Body's Business", by Alan Berliner during a "special" meeting. We all agreed this would help in discovering our style and focus. This was suggested by our professor, who felt it would help in these areas. See we had a great subject it was or is just our honing of the issue we have to work on. Besides all this it is just a really great idea to come together as a TEAM and watch other documentaries. And there are so many good reasons this will make our team and documentary stronger. I look forward to sipping on some coffee and brainstorming after we view this.

Let's see what else have we done? Well, we pretty much worked on our organizing and we have shared ideas and open the door for input, research, and planing. There is still more I need to post about what we have done and will do, so stay tuned.

Pleeeeeeeeeeaseeeee, feel free to comment and make suggestions or ask a few questions.

See you at the movies,
TC

What's on the agenda?

Well, the team is trying our best to schedule a regular time to meet. Right now we will have our first official meeting Wednesday. We wanted to meet earlier, but between work, school, and everyday life we have had difficulty. We will work out these kinks, and we are keeping in touch regularly. Some of the things we will discuss are our approach such as in our reading assignments and the objective questions in our last blog entries. We will also cover what each of us need to get doing and sharing ideas and along with questions, concerns, and whatever the others bring to the table. There are some upcoming events in the timetable of Dr. B and we will look into what to cover. We will develop a strategy, but I want to do some gorilla work also and take on spontaneous events and such that arise or was not aware of. The team and I have decided to continue our research and viewing of other documentaries such as "Nobody's Business" to help our techniques. This does also include the research on the subject.

I do have some footage from the Mentoring School's Annual Banquet of '06 along with an interview with the guest speaker. I also have some journal topics of that eventful day that I will display soon. I also have future plans that may not be met during the semester, but should not effect the short version of this documentary. I plan to add more to this after graduation that will take us (our team, if they choose to stay on) overseas to India.

Thoughts on subject matter

This documentary is originally my own brain child. I have spent over two years with Dr. Bill Bennett and his Mentoring School. So yes I have a bias on the matter, but believe this was a story that needed to be shared with all walks of life. I am an filmmaker filmmaker (I call it), meaning I like all types of film making not just Narrative or Documentary genres. But when it does come to documentaries I have recently found myself appealed to subjects of my faith. Yes, my identity pie reveals that this is what determines a lot of my choices and so on. But this particular story has never been told and yet here is this man who has influenced so many and above all is simply doing what he believes he was called to do. In a time I was exploring my questions in life concerning my faith especially, I was lead to this man and he showed me where to find the answers. I had no plans or thoughts on coming to this area after I got out of the Navy. I just wanted to get out of there and start on my own journey and take my G.I. Bill and get a film degree. That I knew I wanted, just to travel and make movies. Instead I fell in love and traded my travel money in for a diamond ring. So going to church I was asked to help out with the youth. I figured I could help them make better decisions than I did, since I was once where they where at. One thing lead to another and the Youth Pastor found out I was considering staying in N.C. and going to UNCW for film after I got married. So he told me about this guy (Dr. Bennett or Dr. B as we call him), and I promised I would try him out. So this newly wed guy (me) keep to my promise when we arrived in town somewhere in 2004. I couldn't believe the knowledge and presence of this man, I had to keep coming back. After seeing how other men where changed and his own personal pursuit and involvement with me I was hooked. I considered him my "Yoda", with his vast knowledge and answers. Now I know this was a brief and not to detailed history or explanation of this guy, but hopefully this blog and this film will do more justice. I do have a Bias because I am so involved with him, but I hope with my team we can do a good documentary on Dr. B and with every one's different views.

So the other guys are down with doing this Doc., and they each will bring there own bias and view on the matter. And my own is one that is close and personal with the subject and believes the same. But I had to make a decision during my search for answers that something has to be out there with the answers, and it could only be one thing. I could either believe in a textbook, other people, another Bible like source or the Christian Bible to name a few I have searched. During my seeking I decided to put my faith in the Christian Bible and use it to compare to others answers or responses and then made a choice to believe it first. Now I have also questioned is this because of my up-bringing or other reasons. Trust me I searched it all and did my research and played my devils advocate, but I keep finding my self coming back to it and was fulfilled by its answers. I do not believe that my meeting Dr. B or doing this Doc. was by accident and I hope I can give you a glimpse of this man and his ministry and mentoring as a whole. I still have research to do and decision to make, but we will give you a documentary worth seeing.

I also understand as stated above what my bias' are and also I understand that my team has different views and up-bringings. So I will do my best to stay objective, but make sure my own heart remains or otherwise this the film will be without emotion or art. So playing "devil's advocate", I know there are people who may oppose this subject or the way we go about it. I will try to keep that in mind through the process. I will also will try to search and explore for such an objective view and attend to the whole audience, not just a particular group. If I did not believe as I do I would wonder a few things such as: Why is Dr. B's school focused on men or Christian men even?, How can one man really mentor so many people in so many places?, or How is this so different than "regular" mentoring?

I know there are many questions and oppositions to the subject matter. If I believed in another religion or anything other than what this man does, I would have a problem with understanding his "true" purpose. He would seem to me just another evangelist or teacher. Maybe just another ministry trying to get money or cheat the tax system. I could see how others would see this is a secret club or men just getting together without their wives. This group is a hurdle in the fight of equality of the sexes. There are so many possible oppositions and questions, that I will try to keep in mind and apply to our research and filming. This will only help me and the film, and also make for a better documentary that will appeal to all. And as I try to do I hope others will also explore and watch this film even if opposed. For if we truly believe in what we believe and are knowledgeable, we should have no fear of challenges or opposites of those beliefs.

I hope this helps and please feel free to comment and share your own questions, ideas and so forth.

My schedule for week one

This is my schedule for this week if my team needs me.
