Below are just a few of the many articles that relate to our subject or brought up questions and curiosity about mentoring. There are even subjects that I believe we will discuss that I have yet found any research on. I hope by intelligently seeking such information that challenges our documentary and us individualy we will have a better understanding and supportive film. This is fun for me, but I do have to admit reading a bunch can drive you mad. I can see that having a team collaborate on the research they find is much more efficient. Knowledge is power, enjoy and if you want more I have it, so please contact me any time.

Abstract: The article focuses on the importance of "role models" and "Christian mentoring" in the United States. A steady stream of unsettling incidents involving young people helps propel the discussion on the impact of role models--positive and negative--on impressionable youth and formative children. It's an especially urgent topic in urban America, where the social and economic fabric continues to unravel. The end results of disintegrating family structures are obvious in the troubled Buffalo, New York neighborhood.

Keywords: prevalence of mentoring relationships in secular & religiously oriented professional psychology programs, psychologists
Abstract: Investigated the prevalence and nature of mentor-protégé relationships in religiously integrated professional psychology programs. A survey instrument regarding mentor relationships was completed by 2 distinct samples of PsyD clinical psychologists: (1) a random sample of 373 PsyD members of the American Psychological Association (APA), and (2) 286 graduates from the religiously integrated PsyD programs at George Fox University, Fuller Theological Seminary, and Rosemead School of Psychology. Overall, 55% of PsyD graduates reported having a faculty mentor during graduate school. Graduates of secular and religious programs were equally likely to be mentored. Mentors in religious programs were significantly more likely to be male ( 88.2%) than mentors in secular programs (59%). (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to explore professional women's experiences of mentoring relationships. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 22 female professors from Christian institutions and the data were analyzed according to Strauss and Corbin's (1998) techniques for analyzing qualitative data based on a grounded theory approach. Analysis of the data resulted in two prominent themes, directionality and dimensionality. Both directionality and dimensionality occur within a spectrum of mentoring where tension is frequently experienced with regard to balancing multiple roles. Also, one's faith affects decisions that are made. At one end of the spectrum are unidirectional and unidimensional mentoring relationships. As an individual and/or mentoring relationship develops, the spectrum widens to include relationships that are increasingly bi-directional and multidimensional. Furthermore, as individual development occurs, experiences of internal tension likely change in tandem with developmental needs and/or a deepening of faith. Early mentoring relationships were often described by the participants as unidirectional because one is usually receiving modeling, guidance and advice from another. Throughout one's development and growth, mentoring evolves into more bi-directional relationships when one experiences mutuality with a mentor. Co-mentoring can be described as the pinnacle of directionality because it implies mutuality with each other or within a group without the power differential that is present in traditional mentoring relationships. The results also indicate that different facets of life, or dimensions, emerge as mentoring relationships evolve. Dimensions build on each other and include negotiating one's career path and navigating the balancing of multiple roles. Internal tension and faith are present throughout the spectrum of dimensionality and, if expressed, aid in the movement to multidimensional mentoring relationships. The findings suggest that mentoring involves a developmental and dynamic process that is not static, nor easily reduced to discrete stages. Title: Moral training for nature's egotists: Mentoring relationships in George Eliot's fiction.

Keywords: George Eliot; mentoring relationship; moral mentoring; fiction
Abstract: George Eliot's fiction is filled with mentoring relationships which generally consist of a wise male mentor and a foolish, egotistic female mentee. The mentoring narratives relate the conversion of the mentee from narcissism to selfless devotion to the community. By retaining the Christian value of self-abnegation and the Christian tendency to devalue nature, Eliot, nominally a secular humanist who abandoned Christianity, reveals herself still to be a covert Christian. In Chapter 1 I introduce the moral mentoring theme and provide background material. Chapter 2 consists of an examination of Felix Holt, which clearly displays Eliot's crucial dichotomy: the moral is superior to the natural. In Chapter 3 I present a Freudian analysis of Gwendolen Harleth, the mentee most fully developed. In Chapter 4 I examine two early mentees, who differ from later mentees primarily in that they are not egotists and can be treated with sympathy. Chapter 5 covers three gender-modified relationships. These relationships show contrasting views of nature: in the Dinah Morris-Hetty Sorrel narrative, like most of the others, Eliot privileges the transcendence of nature. The other two, Mary Garth-Fred Vincy and Dolly Winthrop-Silas Marner, are exceptions as Eliot portrays in them a Wordsworthian reconciliation with nature. In Chapter 6 I focus on Maggie Tulliver, a mentee with three failed mentors and two antimentors. Maggie chooses regression over growth as symbolized by her drowning death in her brother's arms. In Chapter 7 I examine Middlemarch, whose lack of a successful standard mentoring relationship contributes to its dark vision. Chapter 8 contains a reading of Romola which interprets Romola, the only mentee whose story takes place outside nineteenth-century England, as a feminist fantasy for Eliot. Chapter 9 concludes the discussion, focusing primarily on the question why the mentoring theme was so compelling for George Eliot. In the Appendix I examine the relationships in Eliot's life in which she herself was a mentee or a mentor. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)

As we talked about the complications of the popular (or not so popular) public image of Christianity in our last meeting I am very excited to see Sojourners Magazine come up in your research. Jim Wallis is definately an important Christian public figure who does not subscribe to the conservative right ideology. Where does he live? How exciting would it be to interview him about the importance of Christian mentoring? If you have time, check out his NPR interview regarding God's Politics. He's a man on a mission.
